"We spend our whole lives asking ourselves who we are. Each answer lasts only as long as a single step. Then the road demands another. Perhaps identity is not an answer. It is the question that keeps walking with us. We search for a place, a job, a name that defines us, as if one word were enough to contain us. But life always takes us a little further. And perhaps freedom is exactly this: allowing oneself to change, to prove oneself wrong, to make room for what we do not yet know about ourselves."

From this reflection by Maria Luisa Pianegonda, founder of the Italian handcrafted silver jewelry brand Maria e Luisa Jewels, comes “Lo spazio del divenire” [The Space of Becoming]: a photo campaign that portrays the contemporary woman not as a completed identity, but as a presence in constant motion.

In front of the lens, the woman is never defined by age or a fixed identity. She naturally moves through strength and vulnerability, essentiality and theatricality, rigor and sensuality. Each portrait opens up a possibility, without seeking a definitive answer.

The same vision takes shape in Maria e Luisa Jewels jewelry. Handcrafted in Italy from 925 silver, every creation possesses a bold character without imposing an identity on the wearer. The engraved surfaces, the depth of the hand-carved material, and the dialogue between shapes and volumes accompany movement, letting each piece of jewelry find a different meaning together with the person wearing it.

"I have never thought of jewelry as something that must define a person. On the contrary, I believe it should grant the freedom to be different every day, to change, to surprise oneself. Our creations have a strong presence, but it is always the woman who wears them who gives them an identity."

To define oneself often means to draw a boundary. Maria e Luisa Jewels chooses, instead, to inhabit what remains open. To celebrate the freedom to change, to embrace one's contradictions, to never stop questioning. Perhaps identity is not an answer. It is the question that keeps walking with us.
